There are many versions of Atoms floating around, most of which i found while looking for the version i remembered for my remake. I first played Atoms on the Amiga 500, it was on a coverdisk from Amiga Power (if i remember correctly,) and the version they offered was written by a guy called Tom Kuhn.
Atoms was (and still is,) a very simple puzzle game, players take it in turns to place a single atom into a square on the 10×6 grid, if you place an atom on a square you already inhabit, it will grow to two atoms, then three, but four will make it explode into neighboring squares which will turn opponents atoms into yours, incrementing them in turn. Through this spill-over, its possible to chain explosions, and sometimes there could be large chains which could change the momentum of the game.
The game is won or lost on basic board domination, when a player loses all his atoms, he is out. Last one standing is the winner, the game can be played by 2 - 4 players.
The original Atoms was multiplayer only, and as there was no networking, all the players had to be at the same machine, taking it in turns to use the mouse. I remember playing this back in the early 90’s and having a good time with some of my friends as the larger chain reactions would always get a cheer.
When it became apparent that my first game needed to be a puzzler, faced with the prospect of making some inane Tetris clone or some other equally boring match-3 game, i chose to remake Atoms.
My version of Atoms is called Atoms 2008 and the initial release will be very similar to the original, this may mean that its multiplayer only on the same computer, but i might add netplay or some basic AI if i can.
A later release will be called Atoms Remix, this will be altered to make the game more up to date and i hope to add more gloss and polish.
When there is a release, i will put a link here for the download.
